Chocolate Chip Scones
Chocolate and orange is a delicious combination. (Makes 6)

Ingredients:
2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) chilled unsalted butter, diced
1 teaspoon (packed) grated orange peel plus 1/4 cup juice for icing
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chilled buttermilk
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Orange Icing: Juice from orange mixed with 1/2 confectioners sugar till smooth


Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Prepare scones: Whisk 2 cups flour, 1/3 cup sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add butter and orange peel; rub in with fingertips until butter is reduced to size of peas.
  4. Mix in chocolate chips.
  5. Whisk buttermilk, egg yolk and vanilla in small bowl to blend.
  6. Add buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients; mix until dough comes together in a ball.
  7. Press dough out on lightly floured surface to 8-inch round; cut round into 6 wedges.
  8. Transfer wedges to baking sheet covered in parchment paper, spacing 1 inch apart.
  9. Bake until scones are crusty on top and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 20 minutes.
  10. Cool scones on wire rack and brush with orange icing.
