Apple and Pear Crispy Crumble

This is the perfect time to make this homey dessert, when there are many varieties of apples to choose from. 
Serve warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream.
(Serves 6)

                           

Ingredients:
Apple, Pear Filling:
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 cups peeled, cored, diced apples and pears (about three each of any variety, e.g., Granny Smith,  Golden Delicious, Bosc, Bartlett )
3 tablespoons sugar
1-teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Topping:
1-½ cups all-purpose flour
4 ounces (1 stick) cold butter, cut into ½ inch cubes
¼ cup sugar
½ cup uncooked oatmeal

13x9x2 inch glass baking dish

Directions for Apples:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Melt butter in large non-stick skillet over medium-heat.
  3. Add apples and pears; sauté until apples begin to brown, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add sugar and cinnamon and sauté until golden brown, about two minutes longer. Set aside to cool.

Directions for Topping:

  1. Place flour in a large mixing bowl, add butter and using fingertips, rub into the flour until the mixture
    resembles breadcrumbs. 
  2. Stir in the sugar and oatmeal.
  3. Transfer apples to baking dish and sprinkle crumbs over apples, spreading evenly.
  4. Bake crisp until topping is golden brown, about 20 - 25 minutes. Cool crisp 10 minutes.
  5. Serve.
